Banff's Municipal Election Day Approaches


October 8, 2007 - The people of Banff will be turning out at Banff Town Hall (110 Bear Street) on Monday, October 15, to elect the six councillors that will represent them for the next three years on the town council.

The ten candidates are:

  • Grant Canning
  • Philip Carmody
  • John Gibson
  • Stavros Karlos
  • Chris MacDonald (incumbent)
  • Erich Mende
  • Mike Mendelman
  • Chip (Cheryl) Olver (incumbent)
  • Karen Sorensen (incumbent)
  • Leslie Taylor
Mayor John Stutz stood unopposed and was therefore acclaimed for a second term of office on nomination day, September 17, 2007.

Those unable to vote on October 15 will be able to cast their votes in advance at Banff Town Hall on Thursday, October 11, from 10 am until 6 pm. Individuals unable to reach Banff Town Hall can arrange to vote from home, but must register with Cheryl Hyde, the returning officer, by midday on Wednesday, October 10 (e-mail: municipal.clerk@banff.ca or phone: (403) 762-1209).

The Town of Banff does not maintain a register of voters, but to be eligible to vote, you must:

  • be at least 18 years of age on election day
  • be a Canadian citizen
  • have been a resident of Alberta for six consecutive months preceding election day
  • be a resident of Banff on election day
  • have not voted previously in this election

Meet the candidates

The Banff Lake Louise Hotel Motel Association will be holding an All Candidates Forum at the Banff Park Lodge (222 Lynx Street) on Tuesday, October 9, 2007 from 7 pm to 10 pm.

There will also be an opportunity to meet the candidates informally over appetizers and happy hour drinks at a Candidates Meet & Greet being held at the Hoodoo Lounge and Nightclub (137 Banff Avenue) on Friday, October 12 between 7 pm and 9 pm.
