Banff Mineral Springs Hospital

Banff Mineral Springs Hospital
Banff Mineral Springs Hospital is the main hospital servicing Banff and Lake Louise and provides pre-hospital care, emergency, operating room, acute care, continuing care and both clinical and non-clinical support. Specialty areas include emergency services, and orthopaedic and plastic surgery programs.

With Banff's seasonal visitor population and its proximity to three ski hills, the hospital's Emergency Department deals with many sports and recreation injuries, predominantly arising from skiing and snowboarding. Severe trauma patients can be transported by helicopter from the hospital to the regional trauma centre in Calgary.

The hospital was founded in 1886 by Dr. R. G. Brett and was purchased by the Sisters of Saint Martha in 1930. It is sponsored by the Alberta Catholic Hospital Corporation and cooperates with the Calgary Health Region in the provision of health services.

International and out-of-province visitors to Banff should be aware that typically, the cost of any medical treatment is not covered by Alberta's Health Care Insurance Plan. Medical bills can be astronomical, so arrange adequate insurance cover before arriving and ensure that the policy covers any participation in extreme sports such as skiing and boarding.
