I stayed at the Banff Y Mountain Lodge in early May and got a room on the third floor with its own private bathroom/shower for $58. In peak season from mid-May to early October, the rate goes up to $95, which is still reasonable by Banff standards.

You can also get a 10% discount with a Hostelling International card. For private rooms, they charge a $50 damage deposit at check-in which is refunded at check-out if everything is in order.

All in all, it's a good place to stay if you just want a base for exploring Banff. Downtown Banff is just a five-minute walk away and the Banff Public Transit bus stops nearby for the Banff Hot Springs and the Banff Gondola.

You should be aware that they are undertaking major construction there until November 2007. 42 new rooms are being added to provide affordable long-term accommodation for service industry workers in Banff.
