Elk mating season in Banff Delete post Submitted by Rob Owens on 08/Oct/2007

Parks Canada issued this Safety Report for Banff National Park on September 12, 2007:

Elk mating season takes place in Banff National Park during September and October. Bull elk become extremely aggressive protecting their harems during the mating season. These animals are under stress, and male elk may charge without warning at anyone and anything that gets too close.

Here are a few reminders about how to stay safe during the rut:

  • The key to safely viewing elk is to respect their wildness and need for space.
  • Keep your distance from elk! Stay back at least 30 metres (3 bus lengths).
  • Never get between a male and the females.
  • Keep your dog on a leash.
  • Please report all sightings of elk in the Banff Townsite, as well as any conflicts between people and elk, to the Banff Warden Office 24-hour dispatch at (403) 762-1470.
