Background
The first Athletes World store was opened in Canada in 1978, and by 2007 had grown to a national chain of 138 stores across the country. Due to financial difficulties, the company sought court protection from its creditors in October 2007. It was subsequently sold by its parent, the privately-held Bata group, to Calgary-based sports apparel retailer The Forzani Group Ltd.
